Daytona.io on the show this week, which has me thinking about my local vs. remote dev setup.

πŸ—“οΈ What's new this week

In preparing for Daytona to be on the Live Show this week (open source Codespaces), I was thinking about how my own dev environment has changed over the decades. My setup is now a mix of local tools, cloud tools, GenAIs, and various "remote development" tools, and I realized:

I no longer have a single way of developing software.

Rather than only one IDE, one file storage, one local CPU, or one server, I have many. I use different environments based on project, scope, and complexity. I have different CLIs for different parts of each project, different git storage for work vs. open source, and different vscode and neovim plugins that I prefer per workspace.

We have sites and talks dedicated to "tech stacks" for infrastructure and dependencies needed to host a product. What we don't have is websites and conference talks dedicated to listing and comparing "dev stacks."

Ever since I got GitHub Codespaces + VSCode-in-browser to work on an iPad, I knew that remote development environments would be a permanent part of my "dev stack."

Today (Wednesday), Daytona released their dev environments product as open source, and they're going to demo it on the live show on Thursday. I'm excited to see how it works and if it can become part of my daily toolkit.

πŸ”΄ Live show: Open Source Codespaces with Daytona

If you're interested in remote dev environments and have used GitHub Codespaces, I'm having the Daytona team on the show to walk us through their similar open source solution. Ivan Burazin and Chad Metcalf will be joining Nirmal and me.

Daytona is a development environment manager designed to automate all the tedious steps a developer needs to perform to set up their development environment. "Essentially, it transforms any machine into a 'codespaces' equivalent."

I'm on my way to Paris next week for the first time! First, a few days with family, then KubeCon in two weeks. We're planning another YouTube Live from the KubeCon show floor like we did in Chicago. If you're going to the conference (or live near Paris), make sure to say high in our Discord Server #conferences channel so we can plan a meetup (and I can give out high-fives πŸ™Œ)

🐦 Tweet of the week

I'm honored to say I've had Betty and Kelsey on my show. This is likely the best tweet of my week.

What I love most in this world is introducing wonderful humans to each other ☺️ – Betty Junod
